Class 5 The five tenets

Posted on Dec 8th, 2006 by Ross : Living Enlightenment Ross

As we were discovering in the last class human beings have two opposing forces operating within them- Ego and Authentic self (spiritual impulse). So the questioned posed was how do I become the Authentic self in my life and less of the ego.A very good question indeed because this is the how of transformation. The five tenets is that answer.

We talked about the first three tenets - Clarity of intention, Law of volitionality, Face everything and avoid nothing, and how these three tenets when practiced together help one develop soul qualities, which are defined as authenticity, transparency, and integrity.
A student in the class asked a really good question at the start of the class which kind of lay the foundation for what the tenets are all about. She said something like this"if we are totally in our ego and we are the ego in that moment ,how do get out of it"?

The more I contemplated this question the deeper I realized how important and profound intention and the capacity for choice is. In the end all we have as human beings to make a difference in this world is choice. This is how consciousness evolves through choice. If we want to create heaven on earth we have to choose it and make it happen.

The first tenet which is the foundation for everything else asks the individual to look seriously as what is most important to them. Then it asks the seeker to come to an absolute unconditional relationship to what is more important than anything else. If the seeker then says yes I want to be free MORE than anything else, then this sets a context for their choices to be made. As we were also exploring in the class when we are identified with ego then it will appear to us that we do not want to be free, because the ego in all of us never wants to be free.It is at this crucial point that we have to make a choice and if we know that we have set the intention to be free then we have to make a choice in line with that absolute commitment. So emotionally it might feel like the wrong thing to do for a time until the authentic self becomes the stronger force again. This is how we strengthen the best part of us.

The second and third tenets are will flow naturally when we know with absolutely certainty that we want to be free because there will be no reason to avoid or deny anything at that point.

As we move to the fourth and fifth tenet the law of impersonality and for sake of the whole, this is were the authentic self starts to become more in the picture. The fifth tenet is all about  purity of motive which is the manifestation of the authentic self and how that part of us already feels about life. It is the BIG YES! As I write this I feel one could take each tenet and endlessly explore it. In-fact in the future I think there might be a whole course devoted to these principles.

Over the period of 5 weeks I felt that the class as a whole became closer together and there was definitely the presence of a greater trust and bond. I would like to continue and develop these relationships and will be holding a meditation practice every Sunday at the salisbury center at 6pm. Then going out afterward to interact and engage with each other in a new and creative way. Also I will be holding monthly meetings at 16:30 on the last Sunday of every month starting at the end of January at the Salisbury center to discuss peoples on-going development after the course.
